For the first time in 2020, Danny Hall’s Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets will go on the road as they travel to Statesboro to take on the Georgia Southern Eagles.

After going 2-1 in their opening weekend at home, the Georgia Tech baseball team goes on the road for the first time in 2020. On Tuesday, the Jackets will make the three hour trip down to Statesboro to take on the Georgia Southern Eagles.

The Yellow Jackets will be looking to get back into the win column after dropping their weekend finale on Sunday to the St. John’s Red Storm 11-1. After solid wins over both St. Peter’s and Cincinnati on Friday and Saturday, both the Jackets pitching and hitting struggled against the Red Storm.

Georgia Southern can’t complain about how they opened their season up, sweeping the Ball State Cardinals. During their three-game sweep, the Eagles allowed just four runs, pitching two shutouts while scoring 29 runs offensively.

The Yellow Jackets on Tuesday will send sophomore Luke Bartinicki to the mound to take on Georgia Southern’s Tyler Owens according to Georgia Tech’s game notes for the game. As a freshman, Bartinicki went 2-2 with a 6.40 ERA over 32.1 innings pitched. He struck out one batter per inning while allowing 21 walks.

Owens, put together a quality season for the Eagles in 2019, going 7-1 while pitching his way to a 4.26 ERA in his 14 appearances and 13 starts. He showed quality control for the most part with a BB/9 of 2.6 while also having a K/9 of 7.5. Owens should be a quality challenge for the Yellow Jackets who offense over the weekend certainly left more to be desired in each of their games.

In their first three games, the Yellow Jackets scored 13 total runs, with six runs coming in each of their first two games of the season against St. Peter’s and Cincinnati. The Jackets hit just .250 over the weekend while also having an on-base percentage of .360.

Offensively for Tuesday, we project the Yellow Jackets to run the same lineup that they used over the weekend.

  1. Waddell (SS)
  2. Guldberg (LF)
  3. Radcliffe (RF)
  4. Hall (CF)
  5. Compton (1B)
  6. Jenkins (DH)
  7. Webb (3B)
  8. Holland (C)
  9. Wilhite (2B)

Going up against Bartinicki will be a Georgia Southern lineup that dominated over the weekend. The Eagles as a team hit .307 over the weekend while posting an on-base percentage of .824 and a slugging percentage of .406. They don’t need the long ball either to have success offensively, hitting just one home run over the weekend en route to their 29 total runs.

Last season, the Yellow Jackets took down the Eagles in a 7-6 game on March 12, 2019. The Jackets originally had two games against the Eagles scheduled for last season but their trip to Statesboro was postponed. Based off both team’s performance in their opening weekend matchups, Tuesday afternoon’s game could be another great game between the in-state rivals.

First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon, Tech fans can watch the game on ACC Network Extra or listen to it via WRECK 91.1 FM.
