Georgia Tech Women’s Basketball: 2019-2020 Regular Season Recap

The Georgia Tech Women’s Basketball program ended its first season under new head coach, Nell Fortner, going 19-10 overall and winning 5-of-7 of its remaining games including wins over #4 NC State and #17 Florida State.

The Women’s basketball team finished its first season under new head coach Nell Fortner in amazing fashion and has placed them in a great position for potential NCAA tournament bid for the first time since the 2013-2014 season.

The Yellow Jackets stack a 19-10 overall record and going 10-8 in ACC play (placing 7th in the conference). The Jackets won 4-of-6 of their games against ranked opponents and post an impressive 10-4 home court record with their most notable win coming on Feb. 16th when the Jackets defeated the #4-ranked NC State Lady Wolfpack, 65-61, on the road.

Senior standout Francesca Pan earned All-ACC honors for her efforts during the season, getting voted All-ACC second team, by the head coaches, and All-ACC Honorable Mention, by the Blue Ribbon Panel.

Pan recorded 12.9 points per game during her senior season ranking as a top-20 scorer in the league. She recorded 7 games in which she scored more than 20 points, and notched a career-high, 30 points, in the Yellow Jackets’ huge upset win over NC State.

The Yellow Jackets also added a historic win on Nov. 17th against in-state rival, Georgia, in the by defeating the Lady Bulldogs for the first time ever in Athens. Although the game was close at the half, 28-26 Georgia Tech, the Yellow Jackets would ultimately defeat the Lady Bulldogs, 73-40, by the end of regulation with Pan leading the team in scoring 20 points.

Other roster standouts include Junior Forward Lorela Cubaj, Sophomore Guard Jasmine Carson, Junior Guard Kierra Fletcher, and Sophomore Guard Lotta-Maj Lahtinen. Carson and Flecther both finished 2nd on the team in scoring averaging both 10.2 points per game. Cubaj would easily lead the team in rebounds averaging 7.8 per game while tallying 33 blocks on the season as well. Lahtinen would have an all-around great statistical season averaging 9.3 points per game (team 5th best), 2.7 assists per game (team 2nd best), and 4.2 rebounds per game (team 3rd best).

The Yellow Jackets have placed as a 7th seed in the ACC Tournament, which starts on March 4th. The Jackets will receive a first round bye, but will continue their 2019-2020 season against the winner of the Notre Dame vs Pittsburgh game, in the second round on March 5th, at 6:00 PM EST.
