The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets picked up commitment No.15 of their 2021 recruiting class on Wednesday afternoon as three-star linebacker Gavin Barthiel committed to the program.

Georgia Tech’s 2021 recruiting class continues to fill up and on Wednesday, one more spot was taken as Lakeland, Florida native and Lake Gibson High School standout Gavin Barthiel committed to the Yellow Jackets. He announced his college decision on Twitter.

Barthiel is rated by both 247Sports and Rivals as a three-star prospect. He’s the first linebacker commitment in the class and the sixth defensive commitment overall.

Prior to his commitment, Barthiel picked up over 30 reported scholarship offers from a mixture Group of Five programs and lower tier to middle of the pack Power 5 programs. Notable offers that he had received included Iowa State, Kansas State, Louisville, Miss St, Nebraska, Washington State, and West Virginia.

At 6-foot-2 and 205-pounds, Barthiel has a good base to play linebacker at the next level but will need to continue to add a little bit more weight to his frame. Ultimately, the goal should be to get Barthiel to that 225-230 range before he sees the field. He’ll most likely redshirt his true freshman season and may need to wait another year before he sees playing time on a regular basis.

Overall, Barthiel is a solid pick up for the Yellow Jackets at a position that already has some solid depth. Last recruiting cycle, the Jackets picked up three linebackers in Khatavian Franks, Tyson Meiguez, and Khaya Wright. The Yellow Jackets 2021 recruiting class now ranks 27th in the country on 247Sports and 25th on Rivals.
