With 48 days remaining till toe meets leather at Bobby Dodd Stadium, YJU spotlights freshman kicker No.48 Steven Verdisco.
As our countdown till toe meets leather at Bobby Dodd Stadium between the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and Clemson Tigers on September 3rd, we spotlight true freshman kicker No.48 Steven Verdisco.
It’s also worth noting that also wearing No.48 for the Yellow Jackets is redshirt sophomore Luke Johns. Originally a defensive lineman coming out of high school, Johns made the move to tight end prior to the 2019 season. He appeared in one game for the Jackets last season but did not record any stats.
Verdisco, is one of two Tech freshman from the Tampa area joining quarterback Tucker Gleason.
With both Wesley Wells and Brenton King now gone from the program, Verdisco is in the driver seat it would appear to be the Jackets starting kicker in 2020. He’ll have to battle Cliff Glandis for the job but Verdisco seems to be the favorite to land the job.
The Tamp native was considered by Chris Sailer Kicking as a top-40 prospect in the nation, coming in at No.37 nationally.
Verdisco is highly regarded for a strong leg, with the ability to hit field goals from 50+ yards. That would be a much welcomed addition to the Jackets special teams this upcoming season after struggling in traditional field goal range last season. The Jackets offense would often have to go for it on fourth down due to a lack of trust in the kicking game to convert on opportunities. If Veridisco can even be a reliable kicker within 45-yards, the Jackets offense will be benefited tremendously.
Only 48 more days till toe meets leather!
