Georgia Tech Weekend Roundup: A dominating weekend for Tech Athletics
Georgia Tech Athletics couldn’t have asked for a much better weekend with men’s basketball, softball, and men’s tennis all winning this weekend to go a combined 8-0.
Men’s basketball gets back on winning track:
The men’s basketball team got back on the winning track on Sunday afternoon with a 71-65 victory over the Pittsburgh Panthers. The Jackets picked up the victory behind 23 points from Moses Wright as well as double-digit efforts out of Michael Devoe (13 points) and Jose Alvarado (12 points). Bubba Parham also contributed strongly off the bench with 11 points in 21 minutes of action. Per Kelly Quinlan of Jackets Online, the Jackets are now 5-0 in conference play when Jose Alvarado and Michael Devoe both score double-digit points.
The Jackets were tremendous from the free-throw line in the victory, hitting 21-of-23 attempts. It ended up being the difference in the game as both teams shot well from the floor. The Panthers actually shot better from the floor than the Jackets, shooting 51% of the floor overall and 38.9% from beyond the arch. The Jackets shot very well themselves but finished 46.8% overall and 33.3% from three-point range.
The victory pushes the Jackets record to 10-8 on the season with six games remaining in the regular season. They’ll be back on the court on Wednesday against Boston College at noon. The Eagles will enter the game with a 3-13 record on the season including 1-9 in conference play.
Softball gets off to a strong start:
Georgia Tech softball could not ask for a better start to their 2021 season as they swept their weekend schedule going 5-0 with double header sweeps of Boise State and Radford while taking down in-state rival Georgia State 8-0 on Sunday.
The Jackets dominated both on the mound and at the plate, hitting .421 as a team with 10 home runs and 44 runs over the course of their first five games. On the mound, they allowed just 11 hits and three runs over 96 at-bats and 103 plate appearances.
Two players that stood out were junior outfielder Kennedy Cowden who was 6-for-11 with three home runs and 14 RBI over the course of the weekend as well as freshman pitcher Blake Neleman who was 3-0 on the weekend, posting a 0.41 ERA, allowing just one run over 17 innings pitched.
The softball team will get back on to the diamond on Thursday in a double header against Florida State. The Seminoles will enter the double-header with a 3-1 record.
Men’s tennis picks up a pair of wins
Also worth noting is that the men’s tennis team went 2-0 over the weekend picking up wins over Georgia State and The Citadel. In both, the Jackets walked away with 7-0 victories.
