Georgia Tech men’s basketball stars Moses Wright and Jose Alvarado will now forever be remembered in the record books after taking home ACC awards.

Moses Wright wins ACC Player of the Year:

The senior forward out of Raleigh, North Carolina on Monday morning was named the ACC’s 2020-2021 Player of the Year after an absolute fantastic season. Wright is the third Yellow Jacket to ever earn the honor behind Mark Price (1984-85) and Dennis Scott (1989-90). Wright on Monday also earned a spot on the All-ACC First Team for his incredible efforts this season.

This season, Wright let his dominance be known from the on-set of the season when he posted a 31 point, 19 rebound game against Georgia State in the season opener. He would go onto record six more double-doubles on the season including four in the Jackets’s last five games. He would finish his senior season averaging 18.0 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 2.3 assists.

Alvarado wins ACC Defender of the Year:

While Wright was as a huge part of the Yellow Jackets success this season, Jose Alvarado did arguably just as much. The New York native has been a catalyst for the program over his four years on The Flats and his senior season this year so far has been a fantastic way to potentially top off his career.

Offensively, he was great with 15.5 points, 3.6 points, and 4.2 assists but defensively he was even better. He nearly averaged three steals per game this year at 2.9 steals per game but also posted a defensive rating of 99.5, his third straight season with a sub-100 defensive rating, though not his career high. His career high actually came last season with a defensive rating of a 94.0.

While Wright and Alvarado  will be able to celebrate their honors for a little, the Yellow Jackets and himself can’t celebrate too long. They’ll need to start preparing for the ACC Tournament when they start playing on Thursday as the No.4 seed in the tournament after earning a double-bye with six straight wins to end the regular season.

The Jackets are already a virtual lock for the NCAA Tournament starting in a week and a half from now but adding a potential ACC Tournament title would make this great season that much better for the Jackets. It would also improve their seeding for the NCAA Tournament greatly.
