Georgia Tech Football: Looking at the Yellow Jackets wide receiver depth
By Gavin Kozlo
With new staff members Georgia Tech looks to improve the offense next season. But first lets look at the current wide receiver room for the Yellow Jackets.
In 2022 Georgia Tech had one of the worst passing attacks in the ACC. But, it will be difficult to take this wide receiver room to the next step. Mainly because Georgia Tech lost their top receiving option from last year.
For example, Georgia Tech lost; Jahmyr Gibbs to the transfer portal and is now a part of the Crimson tide, Kyric McGowan who no longer has eligibility, and lastly Adonicas Sander who also has entered the transfer portal.
Meaning that this staff is going to have their work cut out for them and are going to have to get some of the young receivers on the roster to take a pretty big leap in the 2022 season.
Current Wideouts on the Roster
- Malachi Carter – Senior
- Leo Blackburn – R-Freshman
- Nate McCollum – Sophomore
- Malik Rutherford – R-Freshman
- Kalani Norris – Junior
- Ryan King – Sophomore
So as you can see, it is a very young room for Georgia Tech only having one senior receiver. Along with no one else being a huge impact go-to target for the Yellow Jackets.
As of right now, this is a big issue for Georgia Tech and I think it would be in the team’s best interest to start looking into the transfer portal and see what you can get. Because yes there is some good potential with those receivers but I think it would be extremely beneficial to find some more proven talent.
For those who have speculation on the transfer portal because you feel like if they are in the portal they are “unwanted goods” I promise that is not the case. Georgia Tech is a prime example they lost a ton of talent to it. Not all the guys Georgia Tech lost were unwanted at all.
Teams like Michigan State, for example, have fast-tracked their team’s success by using the portal and you can find some diamond in the rough players, which I think would be a good idea for
Georgia Tech to go out and grab a wideout or two and see what they can do for you.
Especially with the new offensive analyst and wide receivers coach bringing in new talent it would not be hard for them to fit in because all the receivers will be learning the new ways of Alexander together.
To recap, Georgia Tech needs one or two of their young receivers to take a major leap in productions next year or they need to go out and grab some talent from the portal because if not I think it will be a tough year for the Yellow Jackets to kickstart their passing attack in the ACC.
