The No. 21 Arizona State Sun Devils could be missing a key player when they take the field Saturday against Utah.
According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, starting quarterback Sam Leavitt has been downgraded to doubtful for the matchup at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City. Leavitt was originally listed as probable earlier in the week and has taken a step back as kickoff approaches.
6th Year Senior
If Leavitt is unable to play, Jeff Sims is expected to step in for the Sun Devils.
Sims is a sixth-year senior who has seen time at both Georgia Tech and Nebraska before transferring to Arizona State.
Sims has served as a backup since joining the program last season. He’s appeared briefly this year in games against Northern Arizona and Texas State, mostly in late-game situations. His stat line includes three rushing attempts for 22 yards, but his experience could prove valuable if called upon in a hostile road environment.

Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Marcus Arroyo praised Sims for his steady presence in the locker room and his preparation throughout the season. “Jeff Sims’ work ethic and how he’s added on to the quarterback room — just overall his ability since he’s been here — it’s impressive,” Arroyo said Wednesday. “He’s a guy who comes to work every day with a good attitude, prepares well, and makes the team better.”
Arizona State enters the weekend 4–1, good for third place in the Big-12. With Leavitt’s status uncertain, the Sun Devils may need to lean on their running game and veteran leadership to stay on pace in the conference.
The game between Arizona State and Utah is set for Saturday afternoon in Salt Lake City. A big matchup in the competitive 2025 Big 12 race.
