The Georgia Tech–Virginia Tech football rivalry has had its share of wild moments, but few stand out more than the 2007 matchup. Before kickoff, several Virginia Tech players had their jerseys stolen. In a rare show of sportsmanship, Georgia Tech lent the Hokies a few white jerseys. The names were handwritten on makeshift nameplates, and blacked-out Russell Athletic logos had quickly drawn Nike swooshes underneath.
On this date 15 years ago, someone stole Virginia Tech's jerseys in their locker room and the Hokies were forced to wear Georgia Tech's spare unis with names written on the back in Sharpie in "Jerseygate."

Over the years, the rivalry has produced plenty of high-stakes games. Both teams have entered ranked in the top 25 multiple times. One of the most memorable clashes came in 2009, when the No. 19 Yellow Jackets upset the No. 4 Hokies. In 2011, both schools were again in the BCS top 25, with No. 10 Virginia Tech taking down No. 20 Georgia Tech.
Lane Stadium history
Georgia Tech also made history by becoming the first conference opponent to win three straight games at Lane Stadium, one of the toughest places to play in college football at that time.
Conference realignment changed how often these two teams meet. In 2022, the ACC announced it was eliminating divisions starting in 2023. Each team now plays three permanent rivals and rotates through five others, meaning the Yellow Jackets and Hokies will face each other only every other year through at least 2026.
With the ACC’s newest scheduling, the two programs are set to play in 2025, 2026, and 2029. Virginia Tech won last year’s contest 21–6, while Georgia Tech edged out a 28–27 victory the last time the series came to Atlanta in 2022.
This year’s matchup offers No. 17 Georgia Tech a major opportunity. To start 6-0 for the first time in decades and keep fan momentum soaring in Atlanta. The game is set for a 3:30pm kickoff on October 11. A win is critical for to the fan base buzzing. Brent Key and team have a chance of a cinderella ACC run. Next Saturday is the most important obstacle at this moment.
