The first commitment of the Geoff Collins era is officially in as the Yellow Jackets on Monday night landed three-star cornerback Kenan Johnson.
Kenan Johnson, a composite three-star cornerback out of Lake Minneola, Florida is coming off an official visit on The Flats this past weekend. Earlier on Monday, he announced his decommitment from North Carolina and we listed him in our three recruits to watch.
The commitment is the Yellow Jackets 17th in the 2019 recruiting class and their second in two weeks as safety Briton Allen committed to the Jackets last week.
Johnson according to 247Sports rankings is top-1000 player in the nation, a top-100 cornerback, and top-150 player in the state of Florida. He has a rating of .8551 which ranks among the top ten players in the Jackets recruiting class. He is now one of four secondary commitments in the recruiting class joining Allen, Wesley Walker, and Jeremiah Smith. He also becomes the fourth commitment from the Sunshine State.
Johnson was expected to take an official visit to UCF this upcoming weekend but based off his decision to commit, it appears that visit won’t be happening this weekend.
With now 17 commitments, the Jackets have room for a few more commitments and could be looking at a few more open spots depending on potential attrition following the bowl game. With coaching changes, some players may look to transfer, opening up several more scholarship spots for the Jackets but that remains to be seen.
For the Yellow Jackets, they’ll be in a unique position over the next few days that will allow head coach Geoff Collins to recruit while Paul Johnson will coach the team through bowl practices and their bowl game against Minnesota. The next recruiting no-contact period begins on Sunday and runs through January 1st.
