When the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets took the field against the Old Dominion Monarchs, one player stood out from both teams as a game changer, and that player was Yellow Jackets outfielder Drew Burress.
Burress was named Freshman of the Year in all of D1 baseball last season, so he had some big expectations heading into the Yellow Jackets opening day game against the Monarchs.
However, the sophomore would fall flat in the contest at the plate, going 0-3 on the day with a groundout and two flyouts. However, he would reach base one time, although his impact was felt that one time. Burress would advance to second base after Monarchs pitcher Nick Sulpizio would walk the next batter, and a groundout after that would result in Burress getting to third base.
A fielders choice on an infield ground ball would result in Burress heading for home plate, and the throw was not in time as Burress would cross home plate safely to give the Yellow Jackets a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Burress' run would prove to be the most crucial of the contest, as it would be the game-winning run to secure the 3-2 Yellow Jackets victory.
While he did not do much at the plate, Burress would make up for it with good base running the one time he was on base, and playing a great game defensively in center field.
Burress and the Yellow Jackets will be back in action at 2pm Eastern time today for game two of their series with the Monarchs.
