The Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket men’s basketball team heads into the locker room of their sixth ACC conference game down 50-19 to the SMU Mustangs, in what has been an offensive showcase for the Mustangs so far.
SMU jumped out to an 11-2 lead early, with the Yellow Jackets struggling to get a stop early on defense, as the Mustangs made () of their first () shots, which included a trio three-pointers, made by Matt Cross, Chuck Harris, and B.J. Edwards. Lance Terry would get the Yellow Jackets back on the board with a layup on the next possession to make it a 13-4 ball game.
An opportunity arose for the Mustangs when Edwards got hit in the face on a layup attempt, sending him to the locker room. The hit drew a flagrant foul on Jaeden Mustaf, and the Mustangs would capitalize on the opportunity, making the shot, making the two free throws, and making a mid range jumper put the Mustangs up 18-4.
A quick three-pointer from Yellow Jackets guard Javian McCollum would cut the lead to 18-7, but the Mustangs would score the game’s next seven points to take a 25-7 lead, before Yellow Jackets forward Duncan Powell would convert an and-one opportunity to make the score 25-10. Ndongo would then get a man and-one opportunity after making a contact layup, converting on the opportunity.
Through the first ten minutes of the contest, the Mustangs would make 112-19 shots to start the game, giving them a 32-13 lead through the first ten minutes of the game.
The offensive onslaught would continue for the Mustangs, as they just let the shots fly from everywhere, at this point making six of seven shots from beyond the arc.
Guard Javian McCollum and forward Baye Ndongo are tied for the lead in points from the Yellow Jackets heading into the locker room with five each, while SMU guard Chuck Harris lead all player in the game with 11 points heading into halftime.
