In 2019, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and the Georgia State Panthers signed a home-and-home agreement that the two teams would play a series against one another in the 2024 and 2026 football seasons.
The Panthers held up their end of the deal, traveling to Bobby Dodd Stadium last season, but the Yellow Jackets informed the Panthers that the series would be cancelled, and the Yellow Jackets would not be traveling to Center Parc Stadium next fall.
The reason for the cancellation is because the Yellow Jackets announced yesterday that the team had scheduled a home-and-home series with the Tennessee Volunteers for the 2026 and 2027 seasons.
The move was most likely because the Yellow Jackets want to look at more formidable opponents for their out of conference schedules, thus why they scheduled the series with the Volunteers. The Yellow Jackets will be set to host the 2026 matchup, while the Volunteers will host the Yellow Jackets in 2027.
The buyout of the contract for the Yellow Jackets will be 1,000,000 dollars, but as a fan, I think it will be with the money, as I would much rather see an intriguing game for the Yellow Jackets in one of the best atmospheres in all of college football, rather than the Panthers.
The Panthers have scheduled a game against the North Carolina A&T Aggies to make up for the hole left in their schedule with the cancellation.
The Yellow Jackets will now have at least two SEC teams on their schedule in the 2026 and 2027 seasons, as the Volunteers will also be paired with the Yellow Jackets anual rivalry game with the Georgia Bulldogs.
