After a sweep of Old Dominion over the weekend, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets would go on the road for the first time this season, as they took on the Georgia Southern Eagles in a single game.
Freshman Connor Chicoli would make his Yellow Jackets debut on the mound, however his day would be cut short after being pulled from the game in the second inning for Mason Patel. Patel would put on a masterful performance, putting up 5.1 innings of work for the Yellow Jackets and only allowing one hit and striking out nine batters. Caden Caudette would come in for relief to get the final two outs of the inning for the Yellow Jackets, and Jaylen Paden would come in and pitch the entire ninth inning to get the close. Patel is credited with the win for the Yellow Jackets.
The two teams would start out swinging, with the Eagles scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning, but the Yellow Jackets struck back in the top of the second with a single from Drew Rogers that would bring Nathan Waugh home to make the score 2-1.
The Eagles would again go up 3-1 in the top of the second inning, scoring on a sacrifice fly.
Yellow Jackets shortstop Kyle Lodise would hit a leadoff home run, his first of the season, in the top of the third to make it 3-2 in favor of the Eagles. The very next batter, Drew Burress, would hit his second home run of the season to tie the game up 3-3.
The inning was not over just yet for the Yellow Jackets, as first baseman Kent Schmidt would score on a fielders choice to give the Yellow Jackets their first lead of the game, 4-3.
The only other run of the game would come in the seventh inning when Schmidt hit a double to right field, bringing in Lodise to put the Yellow Jackets up 5-3. The score would stay there until the end of the game, with the Yellow Jackets picking up their first win on the road this season, and advancing to 4-0.
The Yellow Jackets will be back in action Friday, when they start a weekend series with the Marshall Thundering Herd.
