The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets headed into their weekend series with the then-No.20 ranked Louisville Cardinals feeling a little confident, riding a six-game winning streak, winning the last game in their weekend series against the Virginia Cavaliers, weekday matchups against the Georgia Southern Eagles and Mercer Bears, and sweeping a weekend series against the Western Carolina Catamounts. With the season winding down, the Yellow Jackets needed to get some huge ACC wins before the ACC Tournament, and they got just that, as they won two of the three games against the Cardinals.
Game one of the series was anything but good for the Yellow Jackets, as the offense would not produce what was expected in the game, only scoring two runs. However, the pitching would not show up for the game either, as a total of six pitchers would come into the game and allow the Cardinals to score 16 runs, 13 of which came in the second inning, before the Yellow Jackets would get run ruled at the end of the seventh inning.
Game two on Saturday would be moved to Sunday after inclement weather, resulting in a doubleheader on Sunday. In that doubleheader, the pitching staff completed a full turnaround, as the team would use three pitchers across 16 innings, allowing just one run to the Cardinals.
The offense would score six runs in the first game, while they would do just enough to come out with a win in game two, as the Yellow Jackets would pick up a 2-1 victory and get the series win.
