With the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets looking like a potential five-seed in the NCAA Tournament around the middle of the season, the team fell off a little with late regular season losses to the Stanford Cardinal, California Golden Bears, and Clemson Tigers.
Add in that they were a quarterfinal exit in the ACC Tournament after losing to the top-seeded NC State Wolfpack, and you get a team that was confident that they would make the NCAA Tournament, but not quite sure of what seed they would get.
We now know that the Yellow Jackets would fall down to a nine seed in the NCAA Tournament, and they will face off against the Richmond Spiders in the first round of the tournament.
The seeding puts the Yellow Jackets in a less-than-favorable position, as if they get by the Richmond Spiders, they are right back where they were in the ACC Tournament: facing a one seed, who happens to be the UCLA Bruins, who just happen to also be the top ranked team in the country.
The appearance will mark the first for the Yellow Jackets women's basketball team in three seasons.
It will be Yellow Jackets head coach Nell Fortner's third NCAA Tournament with the program, losing in the first round of the tournament in the 2021-22 season as a nine seed, and taking the Yellow Jackets all the way to the Sweet Sixteen in her 2020-21 season, where the Yellow Jackets were a five seed in the tournament.
The Yellow Jackets and Spiders are set to tip off Friday at 7:30pm Eastern time.
