When the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets took the field against the Georgia Southern Eagles on Tuesday, the team was looking to start the season 4-0, but there was something deeper than just the win-loss record for some players, and one of those players was Yellow Jackets first baseman Kent Schmidt.
Schmidt transferred to the Yellow Jackets in the offseason from the Eagles, where he played his freshman season last year. The sophomore would play in 56 games for the Eagles last season, most as the team’s first baseman.
In his return, Schmidt would put on a stellar performance, as he would go 2-5 from the plate with an RBI.
Schmidt would get his first hit in the top of the third inning, when after back-to-back home runs by teammates Kyle Lodise and Drew Burress, Schmidt would hit a double down the right field line. Schmidt would eventually find himself crossing home plate later in the inning to put the Yellow Jackets up 4-3.
Later on in the seventh inning, Schmidt would again leave his impact on the game, this time by hitting another double to right field, and bringing home Lodise to give the Yellow Jackets a 5-3 lead. That run would be the last from either team in the game, as the Yellow Jackets would hold on for a 5-3 victory over the Eagles.
Schmidt has started all four of the Yellow Jackets games this season at first base and his RBI against the Eagles was his second of the season.
