If there is a bright spot in the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 4-5 start, it has been the emergence of senior guard Lance Terry, who has stepped up in a big way this season when given the opportunities.
Those opportunities started to become bigger and more often when fellow senior guard Javian McCollum went down with a concussion in the team’s 81-58 loss to the Cincinnati Bearcats on Nov. 23. Terry has assumed the role as a starter since then, averaging 19 points per game and playing at least 36 minutes per game.
Terry has been a big help on the defensive end as well, as he’s gotten a total of nine steals in the last four games, including five in a 91-67 win against Charleston Southern on Nov. 27.
There isn’t a timetable for McCollum to return, so there isn’t any telling how long Terry could assume the role in the starting lineup, but second-year head coach David Stoudemire should be happy to have a guy that he can plug into the starting lineup, like Terry, to keep the already struggling offense from dipping their production even more.
Even before Terry took on the starting role, he was making his presence known as a bench player for the Yellow Jackets, scoring in double figures in three of the teams first five games, including a 20-point outburst against in-state rival Georgia in a 77-69 loss on Nov. 15.
Terry will line up opposite of one of college basketball’s best players on Sunday, Rj Davis, as the Yellow Jackets will open ACC conference play by traveling to Chapel Hill to take on the North Carolina Tar Heels in a matchup that could play a big role in the momentum for the team going forward. The game is set to tip off at 4pm Eastern time on the Big Ten Network.
