The Virginia Cavaliers and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets entered the fourth inning of their contest in a close game, as the Cavaliers led 2-1.
Yellow Jackets starting pitcher Jaylen Payden would continue his start, forcing a flyout in his first batter faced. Flyouts on his next two batters, including a spectacular diving catch by Connor Shouse would end the inning for Payden.
Yellow Jackets catcher Vahn Lackey would get a hit into right field to start the inning, and would advance to second after Carson Kerce would lay down a bunt and get out at first. Lackey would steal third later in the inning, but a popout by Connor Shouse would end the inning, with the Yellow Jackets still down 2-1.
Harrison Didawick would get the Cavaliers first hit since the second inning to start the fifth inning, and then a hit by James Nunnallee would put runners on the corners with no outs in the inning. Paden would get a strike out on the next batter, but a wild pitch would bring home run for the Cavaliers, then a deep flyout would bring in another to put the Cavaliers up 4-1.
Jon Giesler would start the bottom of the fifth inning for the Yellow Jackets with a groundout, and Kyle Lodise would hit a flyout on the first pitch of his at bat. A groundout by Drew Burress would end the fifth inning.
The Yellow Jackets would bring in a new pitcher for the sixth inning, as Caden Spivey would come in for relief for Paden. Spivey would retire his first two batters, but then walked a batter and allowed a single before rtiring the side on a popout to shortstop.
Caleb Daniel would start the bottom of the sixth inning with a single to right field. Daniel would advance to third on a double by Vahn Lackey, giving the Yellow Jackets a chance to get some momentum going by scoring a run. Daniel would advance home on a sacrifice fly to make the score 4-2. Kent Schmidt would then hit a single to bring home Lackey to make the score 4-3. Conner Shouse would groundout to end the inning.
