Yesterday started a weekend series between the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and the California Golden Bears, with the Yellow Jackets entering the game as heavy favorites, as they sat at 26-7 heading into the game, while the Golden Bears sat at 15-17 entering the contest. The Yellow Jackets would prove that they were the better team in game one of the series, as they would pick up an 8-5 win over the Golden Bears.
Yellow Jackets pitcher Tate McKee would get the start on the mound for the Yellow Jackets, and he continued to build on his stellar start to the season, as he would pitch 5.2 innings and allow just two runs and three hits in the contest. Reliever Mason Patel would come into the game for relief duties, and he would wind up finishing out the game for the Yellow Jackets, allowing just three runs on four hits.
On the offensive side, the Yellow Jackets bats continued to be one of the best in the nation, as they would collect eight runs as a team. Highlights in the line include Will Baker and Alex Hernandez, who both hit home runs today. It would be Hernandez's tenth of the season while Baker would hit his second home run of the season.
A three run eighth inning would be the difference maker in the game, as the Golden Bears attempted a comeback in the top of the eighth inning, scoring two runs to make the score 6-5 in favor of the Yellow Jackets, but the Yellow Jackets pulled away in the bottom of the eighth.
Game two of the series tomorrow is set to start at 4 pm Eastern time.
