On Wednesday, the College Football Playoff (CFP) committee approved a new model for the CFP moving forward, and it is something that should be an area of concern for conference that are not named the Big Ten and SEC. One of those conferences of concern is the ACC, which happens to be home to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.
In the new CFP format, the Power Four conference champions will still get an automatic bid, but now they will not get an automatic bye like they did last season. For example, both the Boise State Broncos and the Arizona State Sun Devils would not have received a first round bye like they did last season.
So what does Georgia Tech have to do with all of this? They are currently in the ACC, which has been seen as the weakest of the Power Four conferences, so even if they have the same record, or sometimes even better records than teams in the Big Ten and the SEC, they will be ranked below them. This means that if Georgia Tech, and up and coming program, wants a first round bye, they not only have to go through their schedule unphased, but they have to have help from teams in other conferences losing for them to get that first round bye.
This should concern any team outside the Big Ten and SEC, as they will always be ranked below both teams conference champion, and even some teams from the SEC and Big Ten that did not make their conference championship at all.
