ITA Honors Georgia Tech Men’s Tennis

This might be stating the obvious, but Georgia Tech students are smart. The Georgia Tech Men’s Tennis Team is just an example of the kind of brainpower that is walking around campus and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association gave that brainpower some recognition by naming the Yellow Jackets tennis squad as an All-Academic Team for being one of the top performing teams academically in all of NCAA Division I .

To put the cherry on top of this great honor for the Tech tennis team, freshman Will Showers was named an ITA Scholar-Athlete for carrying a 3.85 GPA over the last two semesters. Showers, who played only 12 matches due to illness, is in school for a degree in business administration

Georgia Tech tennis head coach Kenny Thorne is proud of his team for this achievement as evidenced by the statement he gave where he said:

“I am extremely proud of our team for achieving this academic honor. It speaks loudly to accomplish this at Georgia Tech. We had some challenges on court throughout the season so it is great to see the guys taking care of business in the classroom. This award says a lot about the character of this team, and I am very proud of them.”

Six members of the tennis team earned a 3.0 grade point average or better over the past year, helping the Yellow Jackets tennis squad meet the ITA’s criteria of having a cumulative team GPA of 3.20 or better to be recognized for this honor.

Georgia Tech Men’s Tennis has been under the leadership of coach Kenny Thorne for 17 years. The tennis program has appeared in the NCAA Championship 14 times.

Congratulations to these young men for taking care of business in the classroom and on the tennis court. They worked hard for this honor on and off the court.
