The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets baseball program headed into the season with a lot of eyes on them, as sophomore Drew Burress would be one of the most highly-sought after players this season after a phenomenal freshman campaign that seen him lead the team in six statistical categories, so there was no way that a freshman could come in right behind him and be just as productive, right? Enter new Yellow Jackets freshamn Alex Hernandez.

Alex Hernandez has made quite the name for himself in the Yellow Jackets first 12 games this season, as he currently leads the team with five home runs this season and his 18 RBI so far leads the team as well. His .327 batting average is around the middle of the pack in the lineup, but I think that speaks more to the depth of the batting order for the Yellow Jackets than a knock on Hernandez.

The freshman has played various roles for the Yellow Jackets this season, as he has played in the outfield, at second base, and even made an appearance on the mound in three of the Yellow Jackets games this season, against Old Dominion, Marshall, and Kennesaw State. In those three appearances, Hernandez has pitched a total of three innings, allowing two hits and three runs.

In a lineup that seen many new faces, it is relieving to know that there are players coming into the team that can be day on contributors like Hernandez this season and Burress last season, because it gives fans hope that the future is bright for the program, and I think that Hernandez has found his role with the team going forward.
