With the opening series against the Old Dominion Monarch not really looking great in the stat sheet and a strong performance against the Georgia Southern Eagles on Tuesday, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets outfielder Drew Burress came into the team’s four-game series against the Marshall Thundering Herd needing a statement performance. And he gave just that yesterday in the first game of that series.
It took no time at all for Burress’ impact on the offense to be felt, as he would step up to the plate for the first time in the bottom of the first inning and crush a ball that wound up over the fence for his third home run of the season to bring shortstop Kyle Lodise and give the Yellow Jackets a 2-0 lead early in the game.
Burress would again make his presence felt in the next inning, hitting a single and bring home third baseman Carson Kerce to give the Yellow Jackets a 4-0 lead.
Burress would be walked in the third inning, but in the fifth, he would hit a ground rule double, and nearly make it all around the bases, but a Waugh fly out would end the inning.
The sophomore would be walked in his las at bat in the bottom of the sixth inning.
In all, Burress had by far his best single game performance this season, going 3-3 and being walked his other two times at the plate.
Burress and the Yellow Jackets will be back in action today at 2pm Eastern time.
