The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets would host the Old Dominion Monarchs looking for a sweep to begin the season, which would be a huge momentum boost for the Yellow Jackets to start the season.
On the mound, sophomore Riley Stanford would get the start for the Yellow Jackets, while Blake Morgan would get the start for the Monarchs.
Stanford would give up a hit to Monarchs designated hitter Efrain Morales on the first pitch of the game, but would get out of the inning without allowing a run.
In the second inning, Monarchs right fielder Kainen Jorge would hit the first home run of the team this season as they went up 1-0 early.
Stanford would face a situation in the top of the third inning where the Monarchs had a runner on second and third still needing two outs, but Stanford would get out of the inning with a strikeout and a flyout after the Monarchs loaded the bases.
Stanford would be taken out of the game after the end of the fourth inning, with fellow sophomore Porter Buursema taking over on the mound for the Yellow Jackets. Buursema would strike out all three batters faced in the inning.
Yellow Jackets third baseman Carson Kerce would hit a double to start the bottom of the fifth inning, then reach third on a dropped pitch by Monarchs catcher () with one out. Yellow Jackets outfielder Drew Burress would hit a deep ball to center field to bring Kerce home to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth.
After giving up a single to Kent Schmidt, Yellow Jackets designated hitter Nathan Waugh would get his first hit of the weekend, as he hit a home run to right field to put the Yellow Jackets up 3-1 going into the sixth inning.
Monarchs pitcher Hunter Baynes would take over for Morgan on the mound to start the bottom of the sixth inning.
After a wild pitch by Baynes after a mound visit with two outs, Yellow Jackets outfielder Parker Brosius would score from third base to give the Yellow Jackets a 4-1 lead. Baynes would be pulled from the game after the wild pitch, with Monarchs sending out Marco Lavari. Levari would allow a double to Kerce before getting out of the inning.
The Monarchs would get the bases loaded with zero outs in the top of the seventh inning, but the next pitch by Buursema would be a pop up to third base, and a deep flyout to center field would bring in Monarchs () to make the game 4-2.
Buursema would then get replaced by pitcher Kayden Campbell, who would give up a single to Monarchs () that would bring home two runs for the Monarchs to tie the game up 4-4. Campbell would get the final out of the inning by strikeout to get out of the inning.
The Monarchs would bring in pitcher Jayce Park to start the bottom of the seventh. Schmidt would start the bottom of the seventh inning with a double, who would then be brought home on a single by Waugh, which would be Waugh's third RBI of the game to give the Yellow Jackets a 5-4 lead.
Yellow Jackets catcher Vahn Lackey would hit a deep ball to center field that would be dropped by Monarchs center fielder Ryan Thomas to bring in Waugh from second base to give the Yellow Jackets a 6-4 lead.
Monarchs would bring in Alex Hunt to finish out the inning with one out and runners on second and third base. Parker Brosius would hit a ball to left field that would be deep enough for Alex Hernandez to score from third on the sacrifice flyout to give the Yellow Jackets a 7-4 lead. Hunt would get the final out of the inning to send the game to the eighth inning.
Joshua Evans would come in for the Yellow Jackets to start the eighth inning, but after allowing two men on base, head coach Danny Hall would pull Evans in favor of second baseman Alex Hernandez. Hernandez would walk the first batter he faced to load the bases, but a pop out to shortstop and a groundout to get out of the inning.
The Monarchs would send out Cole Lanford to the mound to start the bottom of the eighth inning, and he would get out of the inning without allowing a run.
Hernandez would finish out the game for the Yellow Jackets, getting the final three outs and securing the Yellow Jackets 7-4 victory and a weekend sweep over the Monarchs.
