The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets hosted the UMBC Retrievers yesterday, in what was seen by many as a much-needed positive sign for the team, moving to 5-6 this season with the 91-82 win over the Retrievers.
However, it wasn’t always pretty in the game for the Yellow Jackets, as the offense was stagnant to begin the game, at one point finding themselves down 11-2 after an 11-0 run early. Lance Terry would lead the charge for the offense after that, as the Yellow Jackets would turn the tables on the Retrievers, going on their own run, a 19-0 one that included the Yellow Jackets making nine consecutive shots, taking a 21-11 lead.
From there, the Yellow Jackets would continue to build their lead to head into halftime up 53-34.
The Retrievers would make a comeback effort in the second half, at one point even closing the Yellow Jackets lead down to eight points with 2:56 left in the game after an 8-0 run. However, the lead built up by the Yellow Jackets would be too much for the Retrievers to overcome.
In all, four of the five starters for the Yellow Jackets scored in double figures, with senior guard Naithan George playing a crucial role for the Yellow Jackets offensive production, leading the team with 18 points and eight assists to go along with five rebounds. Forward Baye Ndongo scored 17 points and finished one rebound shy of a double-double. Lance Terry and Jaden Mustaf each finished with 15 points and five rebounds.
The Yellow Jackets will be back in action Sunday as they host the No.5 ranked Duke Blue Devils at noon Eastern time.
