As the 2024-25 college basketball season came to a close, there was lots of chatter amongst fans as to what the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and their future might hold, as they prepared for changes after the team went 17-17, the epitome of a middle of the pack team in the ACC.
Then the offseason started, and in what seemed like it would be a heavy transfer offseason, Yellow Jackets head coach Damon Stoudamire was surprisingly quiet in the transfer portal, especially when it seemed as if he would have to find his next starting point guard in the portal.
Sure, he got Lamar Washington, Kam Craft, and Chas Kelley, who are all guards, in the transfer portal, but personally I do not feel that Stoudamire got what he needed from the transfer portal. If the plan was to find someone to replace George, then Stoudamire failed. Craft is more of a three-point sharpshooter, while Kelley has played an average of 4.4 points per game last season, and neither of them have the skillset to match what George did for the offense last season.
The closest answer for Stoudamire was Washington, and while he did average 5.8 assists last season, he is unproven on a big stage, so no one can know what to expect out of him.
I understand that the Yellow Jackets were not the most favorable transfer destination for players, but I feel that Stoudamire could have done a better job in the offseason by bringing in someone like Desmond Claude, Tayton Conerway, or Jayden Pierre.
