The Georgia Tech women’s basketball team has extended the best start in program history, now sitting at 11-0 after defeating the No.14 ranked North Carolina Tar Heels 82-76 yesterday.
Many seen this as a “prove it” game to the Yellow Jackets, especially with it being in Chapel Hill, because while the Yellow Jackets have not lost a game this season, they had not had a signature win yet this season either. Oregon was the team’s best win entering yesterday, who was ranked No.25 in the AP poll when the Yellow Jackets beat them, but the Ducks have lost three of their last four, including a loss to South Dakota State.
The Tar Heels started the game on a 7-0 run, fueled mainly from Lexi Donarshi, who scored the game’s first five points. However, after that run, the Yellow Jackets would take control, as the Yellow Jackets would outscore the Tar Heels 26-10 through the rest of the first quarter. At halftime, the Yellow Jackets would hold a 50-34 lead.
Neither offense could get a lot going in the third quarter, as the Yellow Jackets scored 16 in the quarter, while the Tar Heels scored 11, taking a 66-45 lead going into the fourth quarter. While the Tar Heels would make it a little interesting in the fourth quarter, the Yellow Jackets would walk out with an 82-76 win.
Five Georgia Tech players would score in double figures in the game, with Tonie Morgan leading the way with 23 and Dani Carnegie right behind her, with 22 of her own. Carnegie also added nine rebounds, four assists, and two steals in the contest. The other three Yellow Jackets to score in double figures were Kayla Blackshear, Kara Dunn, and Zoesha Smith.
Up next for the Yellow Jackets is a home game against the Rice Owls, a game where the Yellow Jackets should be heavily favored. The game is set to tip-off at 2pm Eastern time on Wednesday.
