The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets headed into their matchup yesterday against the Virginia Cavaliers optimistic that star freshman Dani Carnegie would return from her leg injury, and their hopes were met, as Carnegie would take the court and lead the Yellow Jackets to a 75-62 win over the Cavaliers.
Carnegie missed the last three games for the Yellow Jackets after going down with the injury in the team's 105-94 double overtime loss to Virginia Tech on Jan. 9.
Carnegie took over the game, as she had nine points in the first quarter and twelve points at halftime, all from beyond the arc. She would score 17 in the second half, bringing her scoring total for the night up to 29 points. Carnegie also managed to pull down nine rebounds in the contest.
Carnegie wouldn't be the only Yellow Jacket to have a standout performance, and junior guard Tonie Morgan would put up a double double, scoring 11 points and dishing out 11 assists. Senior forward Kayla Blackshear would also get a double double, finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
As a team, the Yellow Jackets out rebounded the Cavaliers 44-30, much in large part to multiple players from the team grabbing rebounds left and right, with four Yellow Jackets grabbing at least six: Carnegie, Blackshear, Morgan with six, and senior forward Kara Dunn finished with six
The Yellow Jackets will be back in action Sunday as they host a highly- anticipated matchup with the No.14 ranked Duke Blue Devils.
