For the third straight week, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets women’s basketball team is nationally ranked, as they have soared up the charts to the No.13 spot in the latest poll.
The team is off to the best start in program history, starting the season 13-0 that includes wins over three ranked opponents: the Oregon Ducks, the North Carolina Tar Heels, and the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Perhaps the team’s best performance of the season came in a 72-61 win the last time they took the court, against the then-No.23 ranked Cornhuskers.
Yellow Jackets head coach Nell Fortner has the team looking the best she ever has in her sixth season at the helm for the team.
A large part to the team’s success is the emergence of freshman guard Dani Carnegie, who leads the team in scoring, averaging 14.5 points per game. Carnegie was voted the ACC Freshman of the Week two weeks ago for her performances against UL Monroe and North Carolina.
The Yellow Jackets ability to rebound from multiple positions is also a huge part in the team’s success, with Zorah’s Smith, Kayla Blackshear, and Kara Dunn all averaging over six rebounds per game. The team is fourth in the ACC in rebounds per game this season.
On the offensive side, the Yellow Jackets rely on ball movement and do it better than anyone in the ACC, leading the conference in assists per game with 18.5. Junior guard Tonie Morgan leads the team in assists, averaging 5 assists per game.
