Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets women’s basketball star Tonie Morgan joined a short list of players that have come through the program throughout history when she made a layup with 7:03 remaining in the second quarter of the team’s 105-94 double overtime loss to the Virginia Tech Hokies, as it was career point 1,000 for Morgan. Thus, making her the 35th member of the club in Yellow Jackets history.
Since arriving at the school for the 2022-23 season, Morgan has solidified herself as a leader for the team, and one that has been desperately needed for the Yellow Jackets to grow into the team that they are today. In her first season, Morgan became a crucial part of the offense as a distributor, leading the team with 3.8 assists per game her freshman season, and finishing second in points per game with 9.8 and rebounds per game with 5.6. Morgan’s finished the season with four double-doubles, including three in a four-game stretch.
Her sophomore season seen Morgan take full control of the team on both the offensive and defensive ends, as she led the team in points per game (15.6), rebounds per game (6.8), assists per game (5.2), and steals per game (1.7). The season was one for the ages for Morgan, as she claimed eight double-doubles, and multiple times neared a triple double, but perhaps her closest was in a 64-53 win over in-state rival Georgia, as she scored 11 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, and dished out eight assists.
However, coming into her third season, something glaring was beginning to take shape over the incoming junior: she hadn’t played a single game in the NCAA National Tournament. Now, with the help of junior forward Kara Dunn and freshman guard Dani Carnegie, Morgan doesn’t put up numbers quite like she used to, but the trio have the Yellow Jackets in prime position to get the team back to the national tournament, as they sit at 15-1. Morgan is currently third on the team with 13.1 points per game this season.
Yellow Jacket fans can catch Morgan and the rest of the women’s basketball team in action again today at 4pm Eastern time as they travel for a matchup with the Louisville Cardinals.
